The Good Side of Being Impulsive

You know how we get stuck in the same routine without even realizing it? Well… my wake-up call came from a pair of ear studs.

I’ve been wearing the same pair of ear studs for the past 10 years :) They’re simple gold studs with a tiny pearl design around them—nothing dramatic, just classic. And honestly, I had convinced myself that only those studs suited me. Like some weird stereotype I created for myself.

But one day while scrolling through an online shopping site, I came across this super cute set of ear studs. Three different pairs, at a price much lower than I expected. They weren’t made of gold or silver or anything precious, but the designs were so pretty—honestly worth more than the price.

So instead of sticking to my old pair like I always do, I just bought them. A small, impulsive decision. And when I wore them… oh my god, they looked amazing! It felt like they did some tiny little magic on me. I suddenly felt more confident—yes, all from just those tiny studs!

That’s when I realized it was all in my mind. I had locked myself into this idea that only one thing was “me.” But why? Who decides that?

So I’m writing this to tell you guys one simple thing: "Stop confining yourself to just one version of you. Try new things—big or small."

Maybe it’s a new pair of shoes, or that neon-coloured T-shirt you always avoid. Maybe it’s styling your clothes differently, or trying a new haircut. It could be anything.

And it’s not just about buying things. Maybe you’ve had a tiny wish to learn swimming or skating or boxing. Just enroll. Don’t wait for “the perfect plan” or “the right time.” Sometimes you just have to be a little impulsive and go for it.

Even if you’re a UPSC aspirant (and trust me, no one is more serious than them!), you will still figure out how to make time for yourself. These spontaneous decisions make life exciting. Not everything needs a strategy or a perfectly planned timeline.

That’s all. Try something new. Surprise yourself a little. You never know what small change might spark a big smile :)
